That's Dope: Childish Gambino's Cover of Tamia's 'So Into You'

Oct 3, 2015

Tamia's So Into You is a bonafide 90's classic and the F-a-b-o-l-o-u-s remix as well. So I can't say that i'm surprised that Childish Gambino is a fan of the song because honestly its the ish. What I am surprised about is that voice. Whew...I got all the feels listening to this because he really captured the essence of the song and that's what makes this an amazing cover. I wouldn't mind Gambino dropping an R&B album, especially now as the world waits for Frank Ocean's return.

That's Dope: The Internet

Sep 22, 2015

So, I confess I am late to the game. Like, got invited to go to an Internet concert last Friday and didn't go because I kept forgetting to listen to the music late in the game. I finally sat my butt down and listened to The Internet's latest release Ego Death and let me tell you I am here for it. In my defense the only person I paid attention to in Odd Future was Frank Ocean. I listened to Tyler the Creator from time to time but sometimes he left me feeling like I needed to bathe myself in the holiest of holy water. Due to this, the band completely flew under my radar (the group is no longer associated with Odd Future btw).

Anywho, I digress.

Ego Death is nothing short of amazing and has become one of my new favorite albums. It's a perfect blend of Jazz, Neo Soul, and Hiphop. I will totally wear this out until Erykah Badu or Corinne Bailey Rae decide to drop a new album.

That's Dope: BOOMscat

Jul 26, 2015

Last Thursday LP invited me to an R&B show at the Howard Theater and it was just what I needed. With everything that is going on in the world lately, my heart has been a little heavy and I wanted to vibe to some good music. When BOOMscat hit the stage my ears perked up. Their sound is mellow and sexy. Like, blast on Sunday morning clean up sessions sexy. Not only do they have a dope sound they are also fellow body roll enthusiasts (who doesn't like a good body roll?). My favorite song off of their current EP No Life Jacket is Private Show. Take a listen below.

That's Dope: Lolawolf

Apr 3, 2015

Zoe Kravitz (aka my shero) fronts the indie band Lolawolf and they're serving killer electro-pop. Lolawolf is named after Zoe's two younger siblings Lola and Nakoa-Wolf. The band released their first album Calm Down last October and it has been on heavy rotation (word to Spotify). My favorite track off of the album is Jimmy Franco. Take a listen below ;)

My boyfriend introduced me FKA Twigs and I was not sold the first time I heard her I'll admit. However, the UK singer won me over with her song Two Weeks. This track has been on heavy rotation since I heard it. I also plan to see her preform in DC in November at the 9:30 club. Check out the track below.

That's Dope: KING

Aug 10, 2014

I went to my first KING concert last night at U Street Music Hall and it was amazing! The indie R&B group consists of three gorgeous woman, Anita Bias and twins Amber and Paris Strother. KING is a soulful and mellow group with killer harmony. Its easy to see why they caught the eye of Quest Love and Erykah Badu, their music is just too good to go unnoticed. Check out a couple of songs below. KING is expected to release a full length album this fall.

Thats Dope: Solange - Cash in

Nov 12, 2013

Solange shows us again why she is the coolest woman in R&B right now. Solo dropped her single Cash In off of her record label's Saint Heron album today. She tweeted that she wrote this song a few years ago. I am glad she released it.

Oct 26, 2013

Solange is dropping Saint Heron, a compilation album featuring artist from her music label Saint Records. Solange is aiming to breath new life into R&B with the help of her artist. The first single is Go All Night by KELELA. I am definitely feeling the song and vibe of this record. I can't wait to hear more.

Things I Am Obsessed With: A$AP Rocky - Goldie

Jun 29, 2012

I am not even sure why I love this song so much but I think it has something to do with the fact that it reminds me of Houston. Here is a little fact about me that you may not know. When I was younger I wanted to be a music video directer, the female Hype Williams/Lil X/Benny Boom if you will. Lately I've been drawn to really simple clean videos. So I like this one a lot. I am also drawn to Kanye's Mercy video (I friggin love that video). PS NSFW as there is adult language in the following videos.
